Manchester City produced one of the finest displays since Pep Guardiola arrived in England as a rocket from Kevin de Bruyne edged out Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Belgian De Bruyne scored his first of the season with a stunning drive from 20 yards,, after a one-two with Gabriel Jesus.
City could have had more, Antonio Rudiger clearing Jesus’ brilliant volley off the line and Thibault Courtois making numerous saves, including a stunning reactions block to thwart a header from Fernandinho.
Chelsea, who drop to fourth, were second best throughout and lost in form striker Alvaro Morata to injury in the first half. City remain top.
Man City were without Sergio Aguero, who broke a rib in a car accident in the Netherlands in the week, but were in scintillating form, having 62% possession and 17 shots over the 90 minutes.
Their opponents in contrast struggled to create any chances of note, Ederson making two routine saves from only four shots Chelsea mustered.
It was somewhat poetic that the man who ran the show and eventually won the game, de Bruyne, was let go by Chelsea just three years ago. The Belgian continued his brilliant start to the season with a fine display.
His goal began with a surging run, before he interchanged passes with Jesus and fired left footed from 20 yards past Courtois into the left hand side of the net.
Elsewhere, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi were imperious in defence, and were virtually untroubled but for the rare bit of magic from the returning Eden Hazard.
Chelsea return to action next weekend against troubled Crystal Palace, while Man City next face Stoke.
