This could be the worst season on record from Tottenham’s talisman – opinion

Harry Kane has now been Tottenham Hotspur’s top scorer for the past five seasons running. During that period, in all competitions, he has never scored fewer than the 24 he managed last season. Though this term he has scored 15 in all competitions, it could yet be his worst season to date with regards to his goals per game record in the Premier League.

Kane has twice won the Premier League Golden Boot, consecutively in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 campaigns, during which he found the back of the net on 25 and 29 occasions respectively. His strike rate in every season he has made more than ten Premier League appearances is simply phenomenal. At its peak in the second of his golden ball-winning seasons, Kane scored in 96.6 per cent of games he played. His 29 goals in 30 appearances was deserving of the trophy and a remarkable piece of striking excellence.

He did well not to fall off a cliff from the extraordinary tally when he recorded his second-best strike rate ever the following season, 81 per cent. The Tottenham Hotspur talisman scored 30 Premier League goals, his highest in a season, in 37 English top-flight fixtures.

But aside from those two standout campaigns, he has never boasted a percentage of goals to games higher than 70. His average across the past six seasons is 71.7 per cent, but during his two most recent campaigns, there has been a noticeable dip. Last season was Kane’s lowest strike rate in a season where he has made more than ten Premier League appearances, scoring 17 goals in 28 matches, 60.7 per cent. While this term he is on 64.2 per cent but having scored just two goals in his past five Premier League matches, that figure is dropping all the time.

Currently, the England striker sits eighth in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with nine goals in 17 appearances. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero has the same total from four fewer games. With the Golden Boot already appearing out of reach – Kane would have to double his total to eclipse Jamie Vardy – the Spurs talisman will want to make sure this is not a repeat of last season, recording his worst scoring figures on record.
