Fabinho’s absence could benefit this £45m-rated Liverpool man – opinion

Fabinho has been one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season, with the most memorable moment coming during the clash against Manchester City, where his rocket of a shot put the Red’s in charge after just six minutes in.

But during the Champions League draw with Napoli during the week, the Brazilian midfielder had to be substituted after he went down with an ankle injury. He is set to miss six weeks of action, which during an incredibly busy festive period, where Liverpool travel to the Club World Cup, could mean he will be unavailable for up to 12 fixtures.

One player who could step up and replace the gap left in Jurgen Klopp’s midfield is Naby Kieta. He has only featured in two Premier League games this campaign after returning from a torn muscle which caused him to miss the early stages of the season. Kieta is somewhat of a lucky charm for Liverpool too as they are yet to lose a Premier League game in which he has featured.

However, after arriving in Liverpool with high expectations, having previously been named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season, Kieta has not adapted as quickly as he would have liked, which has resulted in him only starting a couple of games this season. When he has made an appearance, the Guinean midfielder has struggled to impact upon proceedings, as he is yet to score or assist any of his teammates.

Part of the issue may be that he is yet to have an extended run in the side with just 179 minutes of football to his name in a Liverpool shirt this term. Though now Fabinho is set to spend his winter on the treatment table, it gives Kieta the opportunity to kick start his campaign and ensure there is competition for places upon the Brazilians return from injury.
